South Los Angeles Math (SLAM) Cohort 1 at Santee Education Complex decreases college math remediation rate by 59%

South Los Angeles Math (SLAM) Cohort 1 at Santee Education Complex decreases college math remediation rate by 59%

Through the South Los Angeles Math (SLAM) Project, Santee Education Complex is emerging as a leader in college math proficiency. SLAM is a strategic partnership between LAUSD, CSULA, PLAS, and College Bridge. This innovative concurrent enrollment program is co-taught by CSULA professors and LAUSD teachers on high school campuses. Students, upon successful completion, earn college credit and satisfy math remediation requirements at all 23 CSU campuses. The first cohort of students from Santee significantly decreased the math remediation rate and outperformed Cal State LA students in statistics.

In the fall of 2013, only 17% of Santee graduates who matriculated as freshmen across the CSU system demonstrated math proficiency upon enrollment. During the same semester, 76% of Santee’s students demonstrated proficiency by earning college math credit through the SLAM Project. The students’ success was impressive beyond the 59% decrease in the college math remediation rate. The SLAM students’ 76% pass rate of MATH109 exceeded the Cal State LA average by 11 percentage points. Additionally, across the CSU system, only 99 incoming freshmen from 368 public and private LA County high schools demonstrated math proficiency by earning college credit while in high school. The SLAM Project resulted in 22 Santee Falcons earning college math credit.

Based on the initial success, SLAM will return to Santee in the fall of 2014 with Cohort 2. Mr. Robert Bosley, the co-teacher from Cohort 1, will become the professor and Mr. Jose Prado will be the co-teacher. The efficacy of the program also prompted the partners to expand SLAM into the LA Bridge Project, replicating the model to English. This fall, 30 Santee Falcons will once again forge new academic paths as they take ENGL101 (Composition I) with CSULA’s Professor A. Dee Williams and Santee’s Mr. Joseph Zecola.
